Now that summer's approaching police need to emphasize pedestrian safety.
A co-worker the other day almost hit an inattentive pedestrian. A quick driving maneuver averted catastrophe, luckily.
I see a lot of inattentiveness on the part of pedestrians and it drives me nuts. What drives me particularly nuts is children on bicycles without helmets who zig-zag their bikes all across the streets and it's apparent they aren't aware of me, the driver.
I get frustrated when children cross the street and they lolly-gag, often crossing against the light. But there's a huge difference between that kind of frustration and knowing that you could hurt a kid just because the kid isn't behaving safely.
Police often conduct emphasis patrols, like for drunk drivers, those not wearing seatbelts, etc. I'd like to see police in all Lower Yakima Valley cities unite for one week, or even one day this summer, and make contact with children who aren't behaving safely.
Sure, police are busy. This I know.
But I think ultimately it would be worth it because it could eventually save a life.
