George William Speerstra, 91, of Prosser passed away on Saturday, June 20, 2009, in Sunnyside.

George was born April 22, 1918 in Issaquah, the son of Jan and Gina Spreerstra.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946.

George worked for more than 30 years as a machinist for the Boeing Company.

Most of his adult years were spent in the Auburn area.

He enjoyed traveling and farming.

George is survived by his wife, Rita Speerstra of Prosser; one son, Gary Speerstra (Wanda) of Beaverton, Ore.; two daughters, Beverly Barnes of Auburn and Karla Smith (Alastair) of Vancouver; one step-daughter, Marie Vandervies; three grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters.

Viewing and visitation will be held Thursday, June 25, 2009, from 1 to 6 p.m. and Friday, June 26, 2009, from 8:30 a.m. until time of service at 1 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home in Sunnyside. Burial with military honors will follow at East Prosser Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor George's memory may contribute to the Eden Fund at Hillcrest Nursing Home in Sunnyside.
