Expansion work on Sunnyside's South First Street will begin next Tuesday and is expected to last until September.
The work will be done by Mountain West Construction out of Port Orchard. According to Sunnyside Public Works Director Jim Bridges, the company has a 200-day working contract with the city, which is about one year's time. However, Bridges said, the work schedule calls for the work to be completed by Sept. 17 of this year.
Mountain West Construction will widen South First Street and put in curbs, gutters and sidewalks along the road. Other work to be completed includes the installation of street lights, traffic lights at the intersection of South First Street and Lincoln Avenue and South First Street and South Hill Road. Drainage and water system improvements will also be added.
Bridges said the job will consist of four phases. During the first phase South First Street will be closed from Bi-Mart to Lincoln Avenue. Only local traffic will be allowed through.
Bridges said this means only people living between Bi-Mart and Lincoln Avenue will be allowed through,
"No cut-through traffic," he said.
The other phases of the project requires the closure of South Hill Road, the closure of Lincoln Avenue near South First Street and the closures of both intersections at South First Street and Lincoln Avenue and South First Street and South Hill Road. The exact dates on when those three phases of work will get underway aren't yet known.
