PASCO - Knocking down two birdies along the way, Sunnyside High School sophomore Tanner Markham led the Grizzly golf team at yesterday's Pasco Invitational, staged at par-72 Sun Willows Golf Course.
Markham notched a 13-over-par 85 to finish seven strokes ahead of his nearest teammate. The underclassman, said Sunnyside Coach Ryan Wattenbarger, has "potential."
Second in for the Grizzly linksters was another sophomore, Nathan Espinoza. He carded a 92 in what Wattenbarger termed "...a pretty routine round for him yesterday."
Team-wise, Sunnyside brought up the rear at the 17-team golf invite. The Grizzlies tallied a 371, finishing 12 strokes back of the 16th place team, Othello.
Top team honors went to Walla Walla with an aggregate score of 304, four strokes better than the second place finishing Southridge Suns. Walla Walla, led by Jake Hanson's 2-over-par 74, had three golfers place in the individual top 10.
Thursday's medalist proved to be Southridge's Justin Sprengle. The lone golfer to break par, he fired a 70. The next best round, a 1-over-par 73, was turned in by Alex Rounds of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.
In addition to Markham and Espinoza's rounds of 85 and 92, Sunnyside got a 96 from junior Nick Navarro and a 98 from sophomore Jacob Bos. Also golfing for the Grizzlies was sophomore P.J. Garcia, although his round of 112 was not applied to the team total.
The Sunnyside boys golf team is next scheduled to compete at the Kennewick Invitational, to be held next Friday, March 20, at the Tri-Cities Country Club.
