MABTON - Starting a new program is not an easy task, but the Mabton Vikings boys soccer team didn't let that faze them last night. The team defeated Ki-Be 2-1 in Mabton's first-ever home game.
Viking Sergio Vargas scored the first goal of the season for his team at the 26-minute mark in the first half.
Approximately six minutes later, the Bears scored their lone point.
Mabton's Luis Aviles, known for his skills on the wrestling mat, stepped it up and shot the ball into the goal 30 minutes into the second half of the game for the game winner.
Viking Coach Andy Dyer reported his team had 20 shots on the goal to the Bears' four. "We played well with much improvement from the jamboree and the game against Wahluke," he stated.
He said his team's "added aggression going to the ball and taking it out of the air" was an exhibit of the improvements made since the Vikings' last game.
"We worked much better as a team," Dyer commented.
He said there is still work to be done prior to league play, but he is proud of the Vikings for working together, learning to function as a unit.
Mabton's JV also played last night. They sustained a 5-0 loss to Sunnyside High School's 'C' squad.
The Vikings JV attitude is one Dyer said he admires, in spite of playing without substitutes and having a new goal keeper. "They have a lot of heart and are having a lot of fun playing," he said.
The Mabton varsity and JV teams will again be on the field tomorrow (Saturday) in Connell.
