Black Rock Creek new points leader on senior golf tour

WALLA WALLA - Grandview's Akira Nozaka and Mike Stegeman led the Black Rock Creek team to a first place finish last Thursday at the second stop on the 2009 Columbia Basin Senior Golf Tour.

Competing at Walla Walla Veterans Golf Course, the Lower Yakima Valley squad tallied a 782 team score, 28 strokes lower than the second place finishing Columbia Point Golf Course team. By capturing top honors at Thursday's competition, Black Rock Creek took over the senior tour points lead. The Lower Valley team is seeking its third straight senior tour title.

Nozaka fired a 6-over-par 78, the second low individual round on the day from among the 68 golfers competing, to lead Black Rock Creek to last Thursday's first place finish.

Perry Barnhill turned in the second low round from the 10-man Black Rock Creek contingent, shooting a 14-over-par 86.

In the net scoring column (actual score minus handicap), Stegeman was Black Rock Creek's leader. He shot one stroke below his established handicap for a net 71. Pete Laverman had the second low net score for the Lower Valley squad, a 74.

The only skins winner on the day for Black Rock Creek was Randy Boast. He picked up a gross skin on No. 4, as well as a net skin on No. 8. Together, the two skins netted Boast $35 in prize money.

The third stop on this year's Columbia Basin Senior Golf Tour will be at Richland's Horn Rapids Golf Course. That competition is scheduled for Wednesday, May 13, and will feature an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. Local golfers who plan to represent the Black Rock Creek team at Horn Rapids are asked to sign up in the local pro shop no later than Monday, May 11.
