WENATCHEE - Tied for the 12th and final berth into the 3A Regional boys golf tournament, Sunnyside's Nathan Espinoza faltered at the final league match of the season yesterday at the Wenatchee Country Club.
Espinoza, one of only three golfers remaining on the Sunnyside High School boys golf team after a recent incident that resulted in player suspensions and the dismissal of Coach Ryan Wattenbarger, was the only Grizzly linkster that had a shot at advancing into postseason play. He could only muster a 99 in Monday's Big Nine match, however, which dropped him out of the top 12 race for a playoff berth.
Espinoza, though, turned in the low individual round for the Grizzlies yesterday. He shot a 50 on the front nine at the Wenatchee Country Club, slicing one stroke off that score for a back side 49.
Also competing for Sunnyside at Monday's Big Nine match were Nick Navarro, who posted a 103 on front and back nines of 51-52; and Trey Rice, who carded a 130 with front and back side scores of 66-64.
Monday's medalist was Eastmont's Spencer Ellis, who shot a 3-under-par 69 on his home course.
Although the Sunnyside High School boys golf team's season is officially over, a non-league match against Grandview this coming Thursday is pending.
