SELAH - Grandview High School senior Rogi Fajardo has advanced to a winner-to-state match, set for this coming Saturday in Selah.
Fajardo won his District tourney opener yesterday against Tyler Van Heusden of Ephrata, 7-5, 6-2. That moves him into the District title match in boys singles play.
In defeating Heusden in straight sets, the victory avenged a loss to the Ephrata player earlier this season.
"Rogi was very consistent this time around against (Van Heusden)," said Grandview Coach Ronda Penwell. "He was consistent overall with his serves, his ground strokes and his vollies.
"It was a very good win for him," she said.
Fajardo will take on the CWAC North's No. 1 seed in the District title match this coming Saturday in Selah, Aaron Porter of Ellensburg. The winner of the 11 a.m. championship match advances to the 2A State tennis tourney. The loser will drop into the District consolation bracket for a chance to earn the No. 2 berth to State.
Grandview was also represented at yesterday's District tennis tourney in Selah by sophomore Gabby Sauve. Playing girls singles, she was upended 6-0, 6-1 by the No. 1 seed from the CWAC North, Abigail Pellett of Ellensburg.
Pellett, said Penwell, is a skilled player who places the ball well...with power.
Sauve's trek for earning a State tourney berth continues this Saturday in Selah with an 11 a.m. loser-out, consolation round match against Cloe Schmidt of Ephrata. Suave and Schmidt did not meet in league play earlier this season.
