Guadalupe Ornelas, 81, of Sunnyside passed away on Thursday, May 21, 2009, at Hillcrest Manor surrounded by his loving family.
He was born Dec. 11, 1927 in Juchipila, Zacatecas, Mexico to Jose and Natividad (Ramirez) Ornelas.
On April 24, 1963 he married Maria Consuelo Ruiz in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico.
He worked for J.M. Smuckers Company for 15 years.
He learned to read and write at the age of 33.
Guadalupe enjoyed gardening, wrestling, boxing, his three dogs, other farm animals and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
He loved raising a vegetable garden and sharing it with his family, church, neighbors and those in need.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Guadalupe was a happy man who liked to tell jokes, dance and listen to music.
He is survived by his wife, Maria Consuelo Ornelas of Sunnyside; his children, Maria Balbina Flores (Jose Tomas) of Mabton, Leobardo Ornelas (Patricia) of Guadalajara, Mexico, Reyes Ornelas (Alma), Alfonso Ornelas (Isabel), Maria F. Romero (Evaristo), Pablo Ornelas, Fernando Ornelas (Lorena), all of Sunnyside; 18 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; his brother, Pedro Ornelas; and a special aunt, Eloisa Montoya.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Virginia Ornelas; 12 brothers; his parents; and many relatives in Mexico.
Viewing and visitation will be held Wednesday, May 27, 2009, from 1to 8 p.m. with a Rosary to be recited at 6 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home in Sunnyside. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, May 28, 2009, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sunnyside, with burial to follow at Lower Valley Memorial Gardens in Sunnyside.
