Thrill of the grill

Maybe it's because most of our first 10 years of marriage were spent living in city apartments, but Joni and I have never really been big on outdoor grilling.

Even after we bought our first home in South Cle Elum we never really got into grilling that much.

We enjoy eating grilled foods, mind you, we just never spent much time doing our own grilling.

But we seem to be making up for lost time this spring and summer as every week we're grilling something on our back patio. We even grilled all three days over Memorial Day weekend.

The thrill of the grill for us all started about a month ago when we were at a store in Sunnyside and saw a small grill on sale for under $10 -more than half off the usual price.

We figured why not give it a try, even if we only use it once or twice we're still not out all that much money.

It's the old fashioned charcoal kind of grill and petite compared to some of the goliath grills out there, but it has well more than enough capacity for the grilling needs of us two.

We started by making smores and now my grilling repertoire includes hot dogs, turkey burgers and brats.

I know, that's still pretty small potatoes compared to what a lot of people grill, but we're also grilling up vegetables and I'm mulling the possibility of throwing some chicken on the barbie.

We are realizing some benefits already in that the food just seems to taste better when it's grilled.

With outdoor temperatures already getting warm, the house stays cooler, too, since we're not cooking or baking as much in the kitchen.

There's something else, too, about - safely - getting an open flame going, then harnessing it into hot coals to cook over.

I guess it's the thrill of the grill, becoming if even for a few minutes a back patio caveman, master of the fire.
