Keep music in the schools

I am writing this letter in support of the Sunnyside School District's Music Program. The arts are a vital component of a child's education.

Did you know: Young people who participate in performance arts programs are four times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement, three times more likely to be elected to class office within their schools, four times more likely to participate in a math and science fair, three times more likely to win an award for school attendance, and four times more likely to win an award for writing an essay or poem?

In 2001, students participating in music scored higher on the SATs than students with no arts participation. Scores for students in music performance classes were 57 points higher (verbal) and 41 points higher (math).

As budget cuts happen schools across the nation are cutting back on these vital programs. Please don't let this happen in Sunnyside. SHS Band members are currently fundraising by selling butter braids. If you would like a band member to come by your place of business or you would personally like to purchase butter braids, call the band director, Mr. Stern at 837-2601.

If you would like to help the SHS Band but do not want to purchase butter braids, call Mr. Stern and ask him about signing up for e-script. All you need is a Safeway Club Card and donations will automatically be sent to the SHS Band without any cost to you.

Thank you.
