FEDERAL WAY - Sunnyside High School swimmers Toni Castillo and Marisa Broersma competed at State competition this past weekend.
After getting a wildcard placement for State, Castillo swam the 50-free preliminary race on Friday, clocking in at 26 seconds for a shot at State finals on Saturday. Lake Washington's Emilie Kaufman earned first place honors with a 24.21 finish. On Saturday, Castillo clocked in at 26.14 for a 15th place finish at State. Kaufman took top honors with a 23.96 finish.
In the 100-free on Friday, Castillo clocked in at 1:02.92 for a 17th place finish in the prelims, but did not qualify for finals.
"That was her best time ever on Friday," said Sunnyside Coach Jake Kessler.
Broersma swam the 100-yard breaststroke in prelims on Friday, clocking in at 1:12.86 for a 14th place finish and a shot at the State title Saturday. Kaufman won this race, too, with a time of 1:04.81.
In the State finals, Broersma shaved some time off the previous day's competition, clocking in at 1:12.11 for an 11th place finish. Kaufman took top honors again with a time of 1:03.21.
"She went out and attacked the field," Kessler said of Broersma's Saturday race. "She went after it."
