GOLDENDALE - After playing the Timberwolves to a tie this past Tuesday, the Mabton Lady Vikings managed to beat the Goldendale soccer team last night, Thursday, in a SCAC contest.
Mabton Coach Lucia Tovar said her team continued what they started last Tuesday and kept pressuring the Timberwolves and getting to the ball first.
The Vikings scored first in the 29th minute of the game when Marisela Leon received a pass from Alma Leon and shot the ball past the Goldendale keeper.
Tovar said the remainder of the first half was uneventful as both teams fought to control the ball.
Marisela Leon gave the Vikings a 2-0 lead in the 57th minute of play, again with Alma Leon assisting.
"They seem to work well together and anticipate where each will be, communicating very well," Tovar said. "They did very well."
The Timberwolves made the game interesting in the 68th minute when Carlee Wheelon sneaked a shot past Mabton keeper Bridget Garcia, who took over for Mabton's regular keeper, Teresa Flores, at the end of the game.
Tovar said Flores wanted to get some action in the game so she switched with Garcia.
The Vikings were able to hold off the Timberwolves for the remainder of the game to record the 2-1 win.
Flores had five saves for the Vikings and Mabton took 13 shots at Goldendale's goal.
Mabton (2-5, 2-9-1) will host Cle Elum on Saturday, Oct. 10, at 1 p.m.
