Comments invited on stormwater model ordinances

YAKIMA - Yakima County, in partnership with the cities of Yakima, Union Gap and Sunnyside, is holding a public meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 21, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., at the First Street Conference Center located at 223 N. First Street in Yakima.

Comments from the public are invited on two model ordinances for control of construction and post-construction stormwater runoff.

The model ordinances identify measures to control sediment from construction sites and other urban runoff pollutants from development activities entering the storm sewer system in the urban areas.

According to county officials, the ordinances are required by the Eastern Washington Phase II Municipal Storm Water Permit issued by Washington State Department of Ecology authorizing the cities and Yakima County to discharge storm water from their storm sewer system to lakes and streams of Washington state.

Most practices required by the ordinances are already being implemented by builders and developers.

Following the public meeting, each city and Yakima County will fine-tune the model ordinance to meet their respective local needs. Each jurisdiction will then move forward to adopt its ordinance by February 2010.
