ROYAL CITY - Playing in what Mabton Coach Lucia Tovar described as its best game this season, the Mabton High School girls soccer team was dropped from the SCAC District tournament with a 1-0 shootout loss to the Royal Knights.
"They played tough, smart and like they wanted the win more," Tovar said of her team. "They controlled most of the game, getting to the ball first and looking for passes."
Tovar said seniors Teresa Flores, Brigida Garcia, Marisela Leon and Shirley Orellana played excellent.
"The entire team left everything they had to give on the field," she added.
The Lady Vikes played the Knights to a scoreless tie at the end of regulation. After two overtime periods neither team had scored so a shootout was played.
Tovar said Royal City was able to get three goals to Mabton's two.
"It was a tough loss for the Lady Vikes," Tovar said.
She pointed to the dramatic improvement of her team after just its second season of having a soccer program at Mabton High School.
"I'm extremely proud of our girls," she said. "They worked hard to get this far and I know they left everything they had to give on the field last night."
Mabton finishes the season with a record of 4-12-1.
