KLICKITAT - The Sunnyside Christian volleyball team didn't exactly use last night's final league match of the season as a springboard for the Nov. 7 District tournament.
"We just couldn't get our act together," Sunnyside Christian Coach Stephanie Greydanus said of Thursday evening's 25-15, 25-15, 25-17 loss at Klickitat.
Individually, several of the Lady Knights played well against Klickitat, but the cohesiveness that Greydanus is looking for from her club didn't surface on the Vandals' home court.
"We had a lot of great things happening on the court, but we weren't playing together as a team during the first two games at all," she said.
"We didn't play our game tonight and it showed.
"We know we need to step it up and play our game next weekend to do well at Districts," Greydanus added.
The 1B District tourney will be staged at Goldendale High School on Saturday, Nov. 7. The four teams in the league - Sunnyside Christian, Bickleton, Trout Lake/Glenwood and Klickitat - will be vying for one of the two berths to State that has been afforded the local conference.
To get to the 1B State tourney, which will be played out in the Yakima SunDome Nov. 13-14, a team needs to win two matches at District. Two losses at District means an end to the season.
Sunnyside Christian will enter the postseason affair with a league mark of 1-5. Although there is still a league match remaining between Klickitat and Bickleton, it appears as though the Lady Knights will open District against the league champion Vandals, who have already defeated Sunnyside Christian by identical 3-0 scores three times this season.
District tourney action in Goldendale will get underway at 10 a.m. on Nov. 7.
In sustaining the 3-0 loss last night at Klickitat, the Lady Knights were led at the net by the trio of Janelle DeGroot (four kills), Maddy Wavrin (five blocks) and Kelly Newhouse (three kills).
Serving-wise for Sunnyside Christian, Ashley Haak successfully put 8-of-9 serves into play, with DeGroot adding an 8-for-10 effort.
