MABTON - The Mabton Lady Viking softball team lost both ends of a doubleheader to visiting LaSalle yesterday, Thursday.
In the 13-8 game one defeat, Mabton rallied from an early 3-0 deficit to tie the game in the second inning 3-3.
The Lightning gradually pulled away from there and led 13-3 going into the bottom of the fifth.
Mabton made things interesting in the home half of the inning with a five-run outburst sparked by a two-run triple off the bat of Jackie Cruz.
Jazzee Sustaita pitched game one for the Lady Vikes, who slapped 10 hits but couldn't string enough of them together to keep pace with LaSalle.
In game two, LaSalle won 20-8, scoring 10 runs in the first inning to pull away early. Mabton's big inning was the fifth frame when it pushed across five runs keyed by a two-run home run by Sonya Alvarez.
Cruz was 5-8 for the two games combined, with teammate Carisma Diaz going 2-3 at the plate in game one with an RBI.
In game two, Marlen Chavez and Sustaita had two hits apiece while pitcher Mela Alcala had three hits.
"We had our hits, we just couldn't string them together," said Coach Jesus Sustaita.
Mabton (2-4) returns to action next Tuesday with a non-league game at Kiona-Benton.
