Sarmiento, Meeker Grizzly standouts

Sunnyside's Geordan Skyles clears 6-6 in the pole vault event yesterday.

The Sunnyside boys and girls track team lost to three teams yesterday (Thursday) at home, dropping the team's record to 0-6 on the season.

The Sunnyside boys fell to Kamiakin 94-51. They fell to Pasco 76-65 and to West Valley 76-69.

The Sunnyside girls lost to Kamiakin 120-25. They lost to Pasco 69-63 and to West Valley 95-49.

Kennedy Sarmiento led the Grizzly boys with two first-place finishes. He won the 110m hurdles with a time of 16.64, besting Kamiakin's Eddie Del Toro, who finished second with a time of 17.92.

Sarmiento also won the 300m hurdles with a time of 41.39. He beat Pasco's Jordan Le Mieux, who finished in 42.60.

Sarmiento also finished fifth in the long jump with a distance of 18-7.5.

Sunnyside's Andres Cantu placed first in the discus. He recorded a throw of 127-8. Kris Bragg of Kamiakin was second with a throw of 120-9. Sunnyside's Jose Barajas was third and Brian Bennett was fourth.

In the shot put event Barajas finished third with a heave of 43 feet. Teammate Danny Almeida was fourth when he tossed the shot put 39-10. The event was won by Kris Bragg of Kamiakin with a throw of 43-9-5.

Elias Medrano also had a good day for Sunnyside. He placed third in the 200m run with a time of 24.44. Marques Avery of Pasco won the event with a time of 24.33.

Medrano was second in the 400m event with a time of 52.04. He again was beaten by Pasco's Avery, who finished the event with a time of 51.7.

In the javelin event, Sunnyside's Eric Amaro placed second with a throw of 138-4. The event was won by Pasco's Jacob Price when he threw the javelin 151-9.5.

Jesse Hernanez placed third in the pole vault, Eduardo Salmeron was fourth in the high jump and Rafeal Salmeron placed fifth in the triple jump for Sunnyside.

The Sunnyside girls were led by Kendra Meeker. She placed first in the shot put event, heaving the 4-lb. ball 29-9.5. Pamela Harvey of Kamiakin was second when she made a toss of 29-7.

Meeker also placed second in the discus throw. Her toss of 89-9 was only bested by Jasmine Stephens of Pasco. Her toss went 96-1.

Sunnyside's Katie Herndon and Geordan Skyles went 2-3 in the pole vault. Herndon cleared 8-6 and Skyles cleared 7 feet. The event was won by Kamiakin's Danielle Cuevas when she cleared 9 feet.

In other girl events Sunnyside's Marisa Broersma placed fourth in the 200 meters.

Rosario Rodriguez gave Sunnyside a fourth place finish in the 110m hurdles with a time of 20.41. The event was won by Khadidja Toure of Kamkiakin.

Sunnyside's Ana Lugo was fourth in the triple jump with a distance of 29-4. The event was won by Courtney Nelson of Kamiakin with a jump of 32-6.

Sunnyside's Tanya Lugo and Ayla Schmick were 4-5 in the long jump. The event was won by Rebecca Neal when she jumped 14-5.

Sunnyside's Melina Gonzalez was fifth in the 300m and teammate Samantha Reyes was fifth in the javelin throw.

Sunnyside's Celeia Vargas also placed fifth in the 800m event with a time of 2:47.29. The event was won by Marisa Vander Malle of Pasco with a time of 2:27.01.

Sunnyside will compete at the Davis Invite on Saturday, April 10, at 10 a.m.
