Hernandez, Wilson lead Pirates at Walla Walla meet

WALLA WALLA - The Bickleton High School track team competed in its first event since spring break and the Pirates were led by Junior Hernandez on the boys side and Christian Wilson led the girls at last Friday's Walla Walla JV meet.

Hernandez took first placed in the 3200m event with a time of 11:15.63. This was a full 13 seconds better than Southridge's Quinten Docken, who ran the race in 11:48.70.

Hernandez also anchored the boys 4 x 400 relay team to a victory in 4:15.05. According to Bickleton Coach Darrell Lang, Hernandez made up 50 meters in the last leg of the race to pull out the surprise win.

"He seems to run harder with the baton in his hand," Lang said.

Hernandez ran with Peter Clinton, Taylor Brown and Daniel Clingan in the race.

In the 4 x 100 event, Hernandez teamed up with Brown, Nic Venema and Clinton to win the race in 49.73.

Hernandez finished sixth, as well, in the 1600m event.

Henrick Hedahl gave the Pirates a second place finish in the high jump. Hedahl cleared 5-6, a personal best, in the event, losing out to Bernard Deatherage of Hanford, who cleared 5-8. Bickleton's Brown placed fourth in the event when he cleared 5-2.

Venema placed third in the pole vault. He cleared 9-6, but the event was won by Ryan Evans of Walla Walla, who cleared 11 feet.

Venema also took eighth place in the 300m hurdles. He finished the race in 49.38 seconds. The event was won by Kyle Jameson of Walla Walla, who ran a time of 45.28.

Clinton placed sixth for the Pirates in the 800m event with a time of 2:23.08. The event was won by Josh Maier of Richland. Maier scored a time of 2:11.65.

On the girls side Wilson gave the Pirates a first place finish in the 1600m event with a time of 6:30.08. She bested Leslie Olsen by two seconds.

Katelynn Clinton scored a second place finish for Bickleton in the 300m hurdles with a time of 56.33 seconds. Phenix Kline of Hanford won the event with a time of 55.65 seconds. Clinton also finished ninth in the discus throw. She heaved the disc a distance of 63-9 feet.

Clinton also teamed up with Johanna Jensen, Amanda McBride and Jenna Mount to win the 4 x 100 relay race with a time of 57.63.

Jensen, Wilson, Haley Goodnight and Mount also teamed up to give Bickleton a first place finish in the 4 x 400 relay event with a time of 5:12.25.

In other events, Goodnight placed fourth for Bickleton in the shot put event. Her distance was 25-6. Panisesi Taimani of Kennewick won the event with a distance of 28-4.

Mount placed fifth in the 800m event with a time of 2:59.88. Amber Buchanan of Richland won the event with a time of 2:53.11.

"We won all our relays," Lang said. "I don't ever remember that happening at the same meet."

The Pirates will next compete at the Eastmont JV meet in East Wenatchee on Friday, April 16.
