Sunnyside begins crosswalk patrols

Pedestrians beware, Sunnyside is on patrol.

The city of Sunnyside has announced the start of crosswalk patrols, which will see the enforcement of traffic laws and the regulation of pedestrians, motorists and other roadway users.

This means that law enforcement will not only be looking for crosswalk violators, but people who do not use sidewalks, allow themselves to be distracted by cell phones, headsets or PDA's, or drivers who fail to yield to pedestrians.

Other infractions include failing to wear clothing that is bright and reflective to allow drivers to identify pedestrians and not walking on the side of the road where traffic is approaching so that drivers and pedestrians can see each other.

Along with keeping pedestrians safe, law enforcement may be issuing citations for parking violations such as parking on the wrong side of the street or parking cars on sidewalks, curbs or lawns.

Information regarding the crosswalk patrols can be directed to the Sunnyside Police Department at 509-837-2120.
