Roza officials confident water supply sufficient

The Bureau of Reclamation (Bureau) has updated the prorationing percentage for all junior water right holders in the Yakima River Basin and is now forecast to be 71 percent of their normal water supply. The Roza Irrigation District is a junior water rights holder.

Roza Irrigation District, according to District Manager Tom Monroe, is not anticipating any issues with water supplies if the 71 percent holds.

He said, "May 6 the bureau will provide an update of the total water supply."

The update will provide irrigation districts with an updated outlook and will help both junior and senior water rights holders forecast water supplies for the summer months.

"If we experience a warm spell and a high demand we may have to reduce the water supply in the summer months," shared Monroe, adding he has hopes the district will not need to ration its supplies.

"If rationing is necessary, it will hopefully be on a short-term basis. It's a see as we go process," he shared.

Other junior water rights holders, like Kennewick Irrigation District, have asked customers to water on an odd/even basis.

Monroe shared Roza Irrigation District is not doing that at this time because the district is not experiencing problems.

He said his district will know more as the Bureau of Reclamation provides updated water supply numbers.
