GRANDVIEW - The Grandview Lady Greyhound softball team earned its first win of the season this past Saturday in splitting a doubleheader with visiting Prosser.
Grandview lost game one by the deceptively wide margin of 11-1. That's because the Lady Greyhounds were knotted with the Mustangs 1-1 through five innings before Prosser exploded for nine runs in the sixth inning.
Grandview avoided giving up the big inning in game two, though, and in the process held on for a 6-5 win to earn its first victory of the season.
After Prosser took a 2-0 led in the top half of the first inning, Grandview answered with five in the bottom of the first and one more in the second inning to go up 6-2.
Grandview's single run in the second frame - a solo home run smacked out of the park by Chelsie McNabb - proved to be the winning score.
That's because Grandview pitcher Maricruz Sanchez made the 6-2 lead hold up in nearly six innings of work.
The Mustangs made things interesting late, with three runs in the sixth to pull within 6-5.
Prosser then loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh, before reliever Ashley Van Tress coaxed the next three Mustangs into a pop-out, strike-out and pop-up, respectively.
Grandview (1-9, 1-10) hosts Sunnyside today, Monday.
