Grizzly athletes urged to get cleared for fall sports seasons this coming Friday

Football, swimming, volleyball, cross-country and soccer practices at Sunnyside High School all are scheduled to get underway within the next week and a half.

To help student-athletes be prepared and ready to go from day one, the local high school ASB office will be hosting an eligibility clearance day this coming Friday, Aug. 13. The ASB office will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday to accommodate the local athletes.

In order to get cleared to play on one of the Sunnyside High School sports teams, students must bring with them on Friday a doctor's form showing they have passed a sports physical, as well as proof of insurance.

A parent must also accompany their child to Friday's eligibility clearance session, as their signatures are needed on the eligibility and concussion-advisement forms.

For those teens who haven't yet received a sports physical from their family doctor, medical personnel from the Farm Workers Clinic are offering youngsters two opportunities to have the physical completed. The first is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 20, from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Grandview Middle School. The second session of sports physicals will be administered on Monday, Aug. 23, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Granger High School. The cost to undergo a sports physical examination at both of these clinics is $10.

Sunnyside High School's football team will begin practicing for the 2010 fall season on Wednesday, Aug. 18.

The remainder of the SHS sports teams (girls volleyball, cross-country, girls swimming and girls soccer) will begin practices on Monday, Aug. 23.
