Bickleton boys face stiff competition at jamboree

KLICKITAT - The Bickleton boys basketball team opened its season at a jamboree in Klickitat two nights ago, playing two hard fought games.

Bickleton played Klickitat and Goldendale. While the team lost both games, coach Jerry Roberts says his boys played hard.

The first game against Klickitat High School was close. Roberts says his boys had a chance to score at the final buzzer, but the game ended in a 13-12 defeat.

"It was a good game," he said. "I was really proud of my boys. They work hard all the time and they showed that."

Five of Robert's players scored in the first game, including Bickleton junior Nic Venema, who popped in a team-high four points.

The second game against Goldendale High School was daunting for the Bickleton players. Aside from having tall players, Roberts said, Goldendale is a 1A team and claimed a 28-4 victory.

"Our boys still played hard but we could not compete with the caliber of players they had," Roberts explained.

Bickleton's scorers for this round of play were sophomore Justin Roberts (two points) and senior Bobby Franklin (two points). Coach Roberts was pleased with how hard Franklin played as this was his first game playing high school basketball.

Roberts was happy with the performance from his team and coaching staff. They have already identified areas where the team needs to improve and will work on those areas before their season officially begins at White Salmon Tuesday, Dec. 7.
