YAKIMA - With just eight wrestlers at Mabton Coach John Kilian's disposal, the Vikings were able to take sixth place honors at the West Valley Invitational with 51 points this past Saturday in Yakima. The tournament was won by Graham Kapowsin High School with 189 points.
"Overall it was a good day," Kilian said of his team's performance. "They did a lot of good moves and looked good at times."
Mabton placed three wrestlers at the tournament, all in second place.
Danny Magallon (119 lbs.) went 2-1 on the day on his way to a second place finish. He beat Carlos Galvaz (Toppenish) by a pin in 3:32 in the first round. He then got by Tyler Childs (Ephrata) 8-7 in the semi-finals to set up a match with Graham Kapowsin's A. Romano. Romano won the match 3-1.
Mabton's Vicente Mireles (125 lbs.) also placed second at the tournament with a 2-1 record. Mireles beat Laith Saldana of West Valley 12-3 in the opening round. He then pinned Ben Carter (Ephrata) in 54 seconds. In the finals Mireles faced off against T. Salzberg of Graham Kapowsin and lost by pin in 2:45.
The third Mabton wrestler to place second was Fabian Ruiz (145 lbs.) He received a first-round bye and then blanked Juan Delgado (Toppenish) 8-0. In the finals Ruiz lost to T. Sturdevant of Graham Kapowsin by a pin in 5:39.
Damian Diaz (130 lbs.) also picked up one win for the Vikings.
On the girls side, Mabton's Mary Gutierrez (2-0), Jesenia Meza (3-0) and Jazmine Mendoza (3-0) all picked up wins at the tournament.
Kilian said he was hoping to get three wrestlers back this week to help shore up some of the holes in his team. But for as undermanned as the Vikings were, Kilian was happy with the effort shown.
"We did some good stuff," he said. "There were a lot of positives. We have a lot of young, inexperienced guys in the line-up."
Mabton will travel to Naches on Thursday, Dec. 9, for a double-dual against Connell and Royal City.
