EPHRATA - Seven schools competed at the Ephrata Invite Saturday, Dec. 11, but Grandview wrestlers came out on top, earning a total score of 136.5.
Competing against Grandview were wrestlers from Tonasket (123), Medical Lake (120), Ephrata (100), Pullman (98), Moses Lake (71.5) and Eastmont (43).
Greyhound wrestlers won championships in three weight classes. They were Angel Abarca (125 lbs.), Marco Gonzalez (135 lbs.) and Martin Torres (285 lbs.)
Abarca took the championship in his weight class, 8-5 in the finals, against Collin Atchinson of Tonasket. Grandview Coach Jeff Sevigny revealed that Abarca competed with a sore shoulder.
"He's just a tough kid," Sevigny said.
Gonzalez moved up a weight class Saturday and ended up wrestling teammate Joesiah Saunders for the championship. Gonzalez defeated Saunders in a 7-3 decision.
Torres defeated Pullman's Jacob Libey in double overtime in the finals. Torres managed a reversal and pinned Libey in 6:30.
Walking away with second place honors were Grandview's Stevie Rodriguez (112 lbs.), Saunders (135 lbs.) and Andrew Morales (215 lbs.)
Consolation finals gave third place to three more Greyhound wrestlers, including Fidel Medina (103 lbs.), who pinned Tonasket's Clayton Fry in 1:59; Raul Gamboa (152 lbs.), who also pinned his opponent, Richard Mwangi, in 4:31; and Enrique Ochoa, who pinned Pullman's Matt Lyon in 4:04.
"Overall, the kids were consistent," said Sevigny. "They wrestled hard all day."
The Greyhounds will compete against Quincy Thursday, Dec. 16, in Grandview.
