Two injured in I-82 mishap

Two men, one from Bonney Lake and the other from Toppenish, were injured early this morning in a two-vehicle accident on I-82, near exit 67 just outside of Sunnyside.

Both men were transported to Sunnyside Community Hospital to receive medical treatment. Both have since been released.

The Wednesday morning mishap occurred at about 2:15 a.m.

Washington State Patrol troopers say Donald F. Cummings, 58, of Bonney Lake was eastbound on I-82 in a 1997 Freightliner tractor-trailer rig. The semi-truck drifted off the right side of the roadway, rolled and came to rest on its side in both the median and eastbound lanes.

An eastbound 2005 Lexus GX two-door sedan, driven by 38-year-old Jose Sanchez Solis of Toppenish, was behind the semi. The sedan struck the rear trailer, which sent the car careening onto the south shoulder of the freeway.

Both vehicles are listed as totaled by investigating officers.

Department of Transportation officials said work was still underway at 5:15 a.m. this morning in trying to clear the semi-truck from the left lane of traffic. They anticipated having the roadway opened to motorists by 7:30 a.m.
