New Mabton park in the works

The lot that will eventually become a Mabton park is currently overrun with weeds, but the community project is looking to have construction begin on the project in June 2011.

MABTON - A $15,000 grant from the Yakima Valley Community Foundation has been awarded to Catholic Charities Housing Services for a new community park in Mabton.

The park, which will be located on East Washington Road across from Artz-Fox Elementary, is estimated to cost $300,000. The Yakima Valley Community Foundation's grant gives the park an early start on fundraising, but the focus of the fundraising, phase 2 of the project, is not scheduled to begin until 2011.

Bryan Ketcham from Catholic Charities Housing Services said, "The grant from the Yakima Valley Community Foundation provides us with the foundational funding source for the Mabton community park, further enhancing our ability to serve those most in need."

Currently, Catholic Charities Housing Services are working on phase 1 of the project, which focuses on designing the park with help from Mabton residents, the city of Mabton and other Lower Valley organizations.

"The idea is to have it as a community designed and constructed project," said Laura R. Armstrong from Catholic Charities Housing Services.

Armstrong also revealed that the community park project recently received a $1,000 grant from the Wal-Mart Community Giving Program.

Construction on the community park is expected to begin June 2011. When the project is complete, Catholic Charities Housing Services will donate the park to the city of Mabton for its care.
