Accomplices in murder case plead guilty

This past Monday, Dec. 27, two of the four suspects tied to the July 17, 2010 murder of 15-year-old David P. Baldonado of Sunnyside plead guilty in Yakima County Superior Court.

Baldonado was shot and killed while standing next to his bicycle in the 1400 block of Gregory Avenue. The shooting was believed to be gang related, according to Sunnyside police.

Jorge Galindo Cardenas, 19, and Raul Alvarez, 18, both of Sunnyside, entered guilty pleas Monday to a charge of first degree rendering criminal assistance during the shooting and murder of Baldonado. Judge C. James Lust presided over the cases.

The two defendants were accused of assisting suspected shooter Alex Bueno, 16, of Sunnyside. His trial is still pending and he is being charged as an adult for the murder.

For his role in the incident, Cardenas was sentenced Monday to 366 days of jail time.

Alvarez is awaiting sentencing on the conviction due to a pending trial for a shooting on Hawthorne Avenue in Sunnyside on July 10. For that incident he has been charged with four counts of first degree assault, drive-by shooting and unlawful possession of a firearm second degree.

This past September, the fourth suspect connected to Baldonado's murder, Mayra Sosa, 19, plead guilty to first degree rendering criminal assistance and was sentenced to eight months in jail.
