Sunnyside man sentenced to jail time on charge of assaulting 27-day-old infant

This past Monday, Jonathan Juarez, 25, of Sunnyside was convicted of third degree assault of a child domestic violence.

On Jan. 14, 2010, Sunnyside Community Hospital staff reported a 27-day-old female infant was treated for unexplained injuries and swelling to her legs. Medical personnel conducted a post examination and x-rays that determined the infant suffered a broken leg.

The Department of Social and Health Services joined the police department in conducting a thorough investigation that led to the discovery the child was injured during a domestic dispute between Juarez and the baby's mother. The infant was placed into protective custody and Juarez was arrested on charges of injuring the baby.

He was charged with third degree assault of a child domestic violence on March 11, 2010 and this past Monday plead guilty to the charge. He was sentenced to eight months jail time and 12 months of community supervision for the crime.

The baby has since been returned to her mother.
