FREEMAN - Vicente Mireles won a championship for Mabton High School in the 125-lb. division and the Vikings went on to post a sixth place finish at the Freeman Scottie Invitational yesterday, Thursday.
Mabton finished with 103 team points. The tournament was won by Medical Lake High School, with 193 points.
Mireles went 3-0 at the tournament, beating Jacob Walsh of Kettle Falls in the opening bout by a pin in 1:33 in the first round. He then beat Anton King of Medical Lake 11-10 to get into the finals.
King was the No. 1 seed in the 125-lb. division, but Mireles led throughout the match. Mabton Coach John Kilian said Mireles gave up four points in the last five seconds of the match to make it close.
In the finals Mireles wrestled teammate Jesenia Meza and pinned her in 3:48.
Two Mabton wrestlers claimed second place honors at the tournament, one of them being Meza.
She received a forfeit from Tony Lee of East Valley of Spokane in the first round. Citing religious reasons, Lee refused to wrestle Meza.
Meza then received a second forfeit. She was supposed to wrestle teammate Jazmin Mendoza, but couldn't because Mendoza was at the hospital. Mendoza was slammed to the mat in her first round match against Brandon Pugh of St. Mary's. Pugh was penalized a point but because Mendoza couldn't continue after being slammed, the match was awarded to her.
Meza then lost to Mireles in the finals.
Fabian Ruiz of Mabton (145 lbs.) also placed second yesterday with a 2-1 record.
He beat Brandon Avalos of St. Mary's 13-3, then pinned Dillon Wheeler of Medical Lake in 2:16.
In the finals Ruiz lost to Taylor Glidewell of Freeman by a pin in 5:17. Kilian said Ruiz was leading 10-6 but then got caught in a move and was pinned.
Jerry Quesada (112 lbs.), Danny Magallon (119 lbs.) and Eric Huesca (285 lbs.) all placed third at the tournament for Mabton. Quesada and Magallon had records of 3-1. Huesca finished 1-1.
"Overall it was pretty good, we did well," Kilian said. "We're getting our guys to where they are starting to lose some weight. This will make our team stronger."
Mabton will host a double-dual against Goldendale and Naches Valley on Thursday, Jan. 6.
