American West Bank seeking Valentine gifts for troops

Hoping to show their patriotic pride and celebrate the Valentine holiday, officials at American West Bank in Sunnyside are looking for public help in gathering gifts for American troops fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Called Operation Valentine, the idea is to get the community to come together to support the troops, Jeff Norem, a loan officer at American West Bank said.

"What a great way to support our troops and be festive," Norem added. "I feel great about it."

The operation started Feb. 1 and will continue until Feb. 17.

"We'll take whatever people want to give," he said.

Norem doesn't recommend chocolate, saying the candy doesn't ship well. But other candy is welcome. Valentine cards and other thank you notes are also encouraged.

A table is set up at the bank where the public can come in and drop off gifts and cards, or even write a thank you note.

American West Bank is located at 1010 Yakima Valley Highway.
