Jesus Mata, 87, of Sunnyside went to be in the arms of his Savior on Monday, Feb. 1, 2010, at Sunnyside Community Hospital.
Jesus was born July 13, 1922 in General Teran, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, the son of Juan and Maria (Garcia) Mata. On May 26, 1945 he married Marcelina Sosa in Donna, Texas. They continued to make Texas their home until moving to Sunnyside in 1962.
Jesus loved fishing, working in his garden, raising farm animals, peach pit whittling, playing his harmonica and listening to music.
He was a great cook and loved to have his friends and family over for cook-outs.
His wife Marcelina passed away in 1992 and he had continued to make Sunnyside his home.
Jesus was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Jesus is survived by his brother, Gregorio of Fort Worth, Texas; six sons, Mario (Paula) of Seattle, Jose Luis (Irma) Mata of Modesto, Calif., Jesus (Anita) Mata Jr. of Sunnyside, Jorge Luis (Della) Mata of Houston, Texas, Larry (Jerrianne) Mata of Moses Lake and Jim (Diana) Mata of Hermiston, Ore.; five daughters, Maria del Carmen Garcia of Mission, Texas, Maria (Margarito) Alfaro of Puyallup, Marcy (Gilbert) Vidaurri of Sunnyside, Irma Mata of Puyallup and San Juanita (Philip) Cioppa of Danbury, Conn.; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great- grandchildren.
Viewing and visitation will be held Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home in Sunnyside. Mass of Christian burial will be held Thursday, February 4, 2010, at noon at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sunnyside.
