The Sunnyside High School junior varsity wrestling team hosted an invite this past Saturday that attracted a total of 14 schools and 150 athletes.
The Grizzly JV squad had 21 boys and 10 girls compete at the invite, which did not feature team scoring or individual awards.
"This was for some of the more inexperienced wrestlers. The more experienced guys sat out and helped out," said Assistant Jason Moyer. "This one here (the invite) just focused on getting some mat time and wrestling experience against guys from other schools."
Sunnyside had three boys go undefeated at 4-0 on the day. In the 112-lb. weight class, Bernardo Garcia and Santos Guerrero both posted perfect records for the Grizzlies. Teammate Daniel Guillen (125 lbs.) was also undefeated.
One Lady Grizzly grappler went undefeated, as Adeleny Pacheco swept through the heavyweight classification.
There were also two Grizzly boys who posted records of 3-1 for the tourney, Ali Garcia (130 lbs.) and Alex Nunez (140 lbs.).
Two Lady Grizzlies posted 3-1 records on the day, Alejandra Calderon (112 lbs.) and Yun Uenn (119 lbs.), who defeated two boys.
Jocelyn Yanez (103 lbs.) was 2-1 for the Sunnyside JV wrestling team.
The Sunnyside JV team will join the varsity squad this Thursday in traveling to Eisenhower High School for double dual meets against West Valley and Ike.
