Minerva Torres, 62, of Sunnyside passed away Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2010, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

She was born Sept. 23, 1947 in Edinburg, Texas to Alvaro and Genoveva (Veliz) Soto.

On May 6, 1966 she married Raymundo Torres in Yakima. They together made their home in Sunnyside. Minerva was the lead teacher for Washington State Migrant Council and Epic Headstart for more than 32 years.

She enjoyed playing bingo, going to garage sales, telling jokes, reading and singing to her grandchildren. She also enjoyed family outings and trips to the casino with family and friends.

Her world revolved around her children and she loved her husband dearly.

She was a member of the Moose Lodge and St. Joseph Catholic Church.

She is survived by her husband, Raymundo Torres of Sunnyside; her children, Myrna (Ruben) Torres, David Torres, Marcy (Pete) Torres, all of Sunnyside; five grandchildren, Mikayla, Marlissa and Madison Barron, Natalja Torres and Daniel Singleterry; her siblings, America (John) Sanchez, Norma (Paul) Soto, Elvira (Mario) Soto, Alvaro (Elvira) Soto Jr. and Roy (Josephine) Veliz; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Alvaro Soto; her mother, Genoveva V. Soto; and one sister, Graciela S. Reyes.

Viewing and visitation will be held Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010, from 3 to 8 p.m., with a Rosary to be recited at 6 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home in Sunnyside. Mass of Christian burial will be held Friday, Jan. 22, 2010, at 10 a.m., at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sunnyside, with burial to follow at Lower Valley Memorial Gardens in Sunnyside.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor her memory may contribute to the Torres family.
