Magallon 119-lb. titlist at Mabton's Mid Valley Classic

MATBTON - The Mabton Vikings had a disappointing run at their own wrestling tournament this past Saturday but did come away with an individual titlist.

The Vikings finished seventh at the Mid Valley Classic with 58 points. Reardon High School won the title with 258 points and seven champions. Naches Valley came in second with 155 points but had no individual champions.

Mabton's Danny Magallon won the 119-lb. weight class championship with a record of 2-0.

Magallon was given two byes to start the tournament and didn't wrestle until his weight division's semi-final match. There he pinned Thomas Soto from the Sunnyside High School JV in 3:11. Magallon then won his and the Vikings' first title this season when he beat Austin Hudson of Wahluke by a score of 3-0.

Magallon scored a takedown in the first round against Hudson and then got an escape in the third round.

"He's our first champion this year," Mabton Coach John Kilian said. "We finally broke the ice."

One other Viking placed at Saturday's tournament. Vicente Mireles (112 lbs.) went 2-2 on the day and earned fourth place honors.

Mireles lost to Riley Iacolucci of Cle Elum early on in the tourney by pin (1:20).

"He (Iacolucci) just surprised him," Kilian said. "Vicente beat him last Tuesday, 10-3."

This knocked Mireles down to the loser's bracket where he faced off with Rygh Bailey of White Swan. Mireles was able to get the pin in 3:42.

He then scored a major decision against Jason Telles of Naches Valley, 13-0. This set up a spot in the third/fourth place match with a familiar face. Mireles was pitted against Iacolucci again and lost a tight match, 6-4.

The two wrestlers traded reversals to knot the score at 4-4 entering the third period. There Iacolucci scored a two-point near fall and won the match.

Kilian said his team was shorthanded as the Vikings were missing three wrestlers.

Other Mabton wrestlers scoring wins were Elijah Salinas (160 lbs.) and Frank Martinez (160 lbs.), who both went 2-2 on the day. Samuel Sexton (135 lbs.), Noe Gutierrez (171 lbs.) and Bryan Arellano (189 lbs.) each were 1-2 for the Vikings.

The Vikings will close out their league season when they host Naches Valley on Tuesday, Jan. 26, at 7 p.m. Mabton will also compete in the Zillah All Comers Tournament on Friday, Jan. 29, before beginning District matches on Feb. 6.
