Police investigate second straight weekend murder

Just before 6 p.m. yesterday (Sunday) Sunnyside police rushed to the 1400 block of Gregory Avenue for a report of shots fired.

Witnesses told officers at the scene a bicyclist was shot when an early 1990s sedan drove by and multiple gunshots were fired from the vehicle.

The victim, an unidentified male, was struck multiple times in the upper torso. He was rushed to the hospital and was pronounced dead as a result of his injuries.

As of press time the identity of the victim has not been verified.

Assisting in the investigation were officers from the Yakima County Sheriff's Office, Grandview Police Department and the U.S. Marshal's Office.

The investigation into the homicide is ongoing and anyone with information is urged to call the Sunnyside Police Department at 836-6200.

In other police news, the Sunnyside Police Department investigated reports of two burglaries, seven thefts and one incident of shots fired, since this past Thursday.

Sunnyside police investigated a report of shots fired in the Upland Park area just before 10 p.m. last Friday night. A caller told police five to 10 shots were heard fired in the area, and an early 2000 model vehicle was seen leaving the area.

Of the thefts reported since last Thursday, two were vehicle thefts and three were shoplifting incidents. A cell phone was reported stolen from Central Park last Thursday, a stereo was reported stolen from a vehicle at a car dealership and jewelry and money was reported stolen from a home in the 800 block of Ismo Street.

The resident of the home on Ismo Street had earlier reported the theft as a burglary. A television was reported stolen in another burglary at a home in the 800 block of Taylor Avenue.

Sunnyside police have also since last Thursday responded to two 9-1-1 hang-up calls, three assaults, 13 fights, 16 suspicious activity calls, a report of gang activity and two weapons violations. Officers also served 13 arrest warrants and two court orders.
