I know many parents who are exhausted, but loving every minute of it right now.
We have traveled up and down the Yakima Valley and some have traveled to Othello this summer, watching our children participate in swim meets twice each week.
Tonight, marks the beginning of the end of the 2010 summer swimming season.
Children from Naches to Prosser and Othello will be converging with families in tow at the Sunnyside swimming pool to test their mettle. It's the Mid-Valley Swim League Championships that will be drawing all these people to Sunnyside.
This coming weekend is the culmination of hard work and determination on the part of the kiddos. It is the end result of the endless dedication of the families who have enjoyed watching them reach personal goals for the past seven weeks.
Some swimmers have achieved high praise for their efforts, winning ribbons at the twice a week swim meets. Some earned medals at the Regional competition just three weeks ago.
What really matters to most of them, however, is the team spirit...being a part of something greater than themselves. They enjoyed spending quality time with others and cheering on their teammates.
The parents and other dedicated family members have done all they can to make the experience of swim team something the children will remember in the years to come.
It isn't really about winning for most, it's about doing one's best. Some of the youngsters come away from swim meets without a top finish. Still, they are pleased to have in hand a "best time" ribbon.
It will be bittersweet when Monday rolls around and there won't be any swim team practice to keep the idle minds and bodies busy.
I imagine many will be clamoring to get in a few more days at the pool before it is closed for the season and the focus turns to school.
In the meantime, I wish the best to each of the participants pouring into the Sunnyside pool this weekend. Enjoy every moment of it because next year will be different, bringing with it many new memories to cherish.
