Mabton finalizes plans for Community Days Festival

MABTON - After a series of community meetings, the city of Mabton has finalized the schedule for a re-energized Community Days Festival the weekend of Aug. 7-8.

The schedule was shared during the Mabton City Council meeting last week.

The festive atmosphere actually will begin on Thursday, Aug. 5, when a Miss Mabton contest will be held.

The festival kicks off in earnest on Saturday, Aug. 7, with a breakfast served by the city's fire department from 6 to 10 a.m.

A "kiddies parade" will follow at 10:30 a.m., followed by the official Community Days Parade at 11 a.m. The parade will feature an official community float ridden by local veterans.

Due to lack of space, some initially conceived events such as a paintball tournament did not make the final list of activities.

Even so, there will be something for everyone on Saturday from noon to 6 p.m. Besides vendors, Mabton will host craft booths, a dunking booth, football toss, basketball toss, face painting, bouncing jumpers, fishing for prizes, toss for goldfish, a ring toss, dime toss, dart toss and pony rides.

Also taking place Saturday afternoon will be a car and bike show.

Dancing Charro horses will be featured at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 7, followed by a host of contests from 1:30 to 4 p.m. including bingo, diaper dash, ugliest dog, horse shoe, greased pole and posole.

The first full day of community days extends into the evening as an outdoor movie will be shown.

Sunday, Aug. 8, will see Community Days wrap up with a 3-on-3 basketball tourney, as well as vendors and craft booths.

Volunteers have been located to help with many of the activities, such as FFA students operating booths for children.

Interim City Clerk Ret Stewart told council that more help is needed, especially to help sell raffle tickets.

"We have been having people suddenly come up and volunteer," she reported to council. "The more volunteers, the fewer hours they will (have to) work. We are looking forward to getting as many as we can."
