Sunnyside residents interested in hosting block parties during the Aug. 3 National Night Out event are invited to a meeting set for this Wednesday, June 23.
The informational meeting will be held at 5 p.m. on June 23 at the Sunnyside Law and Justice Center.
The Sunnyside Police Department hopes to assist more than 20 neighborhoods in hosting block parties.
On Aug. 3 the Sunnyside Police Department will be coordinating block parties throughout Sunnyside for the annual National Night Out celebration. Police hope to establish block watch groups out of the block parties that are held on Aug. 3.
The Sunnyside Police Department's mission in partnering with the National Association of Town Watch is to accomplish four goals: 1) Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; 2) Generate support for and participation in local anticrime programs; 3) Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; 4) Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
Charlotte Hinderlider is a spokesperson with the Sunnyside Police Department, and she noted hosting a block party primarily involves inviting neighbors and being there for the event. She said the police department takes care of providing invitations and food for the block parties.
The block party may either be held in a yard or in the street, as some neighbors rally together to have their whole neighborhood involved.
The Sunnyside Police Department will also provide road closures for those block parties held in the street.
