Jury renders split decision in Sunnyside murder trial

YAKIMA - A Yakima Superior Court jury yesterday, Tuesday, found Armando Gonzalez guilty in the November 2008 murder of Eric Vargas.

Gonzalez reportedly fired 12 times into Vargas' vehicle during an altercation in Sunnyside near the intersection of Edison Avenue and Thirteenth Street.

The jury found Gonzalez guilty on all three counts presented by prosecutors; murder in the second degree, assault in the first degree and unlawful possession of a firearm.

That's according to the county clerk's office this morning, which noted that Gonzalez will likely be sentenced in about two weeks. His sentence will be extended further because of a special verdict noting the murder and assault were committed with a firearm.

In a related decision yesterday, the same jury acquitted Julian Williams of all charges related to Vargas' murder. Williams had been facing charges of second degree murder as an accomplice and assault in the first degree as an accomplice.
