Katherine Colyn, 79, of Sunnyside passed away on Friday, March 12, 2010, at her home surrounded by her loving family.
She was born April 5, 1930 in Sheboygan, Wis. to John and Anna (Dileman) Eggebeen.
She spent her early years and received her early education in Wisconsin.
In 1949 she with her family moved to Sunnyside, where she graduated from Sunnyside High School. Katherine attended Calvin College to become a teacher. While interviewing for a teaching position at Everett Christian School she met her future father-in-law, who gave her the job, which was teaching grades first through fourth and 42 kids.
On Aug. 14, 1953 she married John Colyn in Sunnyside.
She received a lifetime Substitute Teaching Certificate from Washington state. Katherine was a substitute teacher for more than 40 years for Sunnyside, Mabton and Outlook School Districts.
She enjoyed knitting, sewing and traveling.
She was a member of the Sunnyside Christian Reformed Church.
She is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, John of Sunnyside; two daughters, Susan Colyn and Mare (Marten) Bron, all of Sunnyside; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Edna Bustraan and Marie Bolhuis.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, William Eggebeen and Anton Eggebeen.
A special thanks to friends and caregivers Izzy, Tamara and Melody for their love, compassion and endurance with mom the last two and one-half years.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, March 16, 2010, from 3 until 6 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home in Sunnyside. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, March 17, 2010, at 1 p.m. at Lower Valley Memorial Gardens in Sunnyside.
