Gang-related shooting injures Sunnyside teen

At approximately 6 p.m. yesterday (Wednesday) Yakima County sheriff's deputies rushed to the scene of a drive-by shooting in the 1600 block of Braden Road near Sunnyside, where a 16-year-old male had been struck in the back by a single bullet.

The victim was standing in the driveway at the corner of the home and noticed two vehicles, a white Nissan and a silver Volkswagen, parked to the east.

The Nissan drove down Braden Road and stopped in front of the home, according to witness statements provided to deputies. A Hispanic male wearing a dark sweatshirt exited the vehicle and fired numerous shots from what witnesses believed to be a handgun.

One bullet struck the teen in the back and the two suspect vehicles fled the scene.

Deputies believe the incident to be gang related due to the victim having known gang ties. He was taken to Sunnyside Community Hospital for treatment for a non-life threatening wound.

Witnesses had no further details and were unable to provide further information leading to the identity of the suspect.

Anyone with information about the incident should call the Yakima County Sheriff's Office at 509-574-2500.
