Grandview police led on pursuit that ends in canal near Sunnyside

GRANDVIEW - A Grandview police officer attempting to make a routine traffic stop on Wilson Highway yesterday (Wednesday) just before 9:30 p.m. for a vehicle without its headlights on was led on a chase that ended up in a canal near Kilian and Van Belle roads near Sunnyside.

The suspect vehicle, driven by Jose Rivas, 23, of Toppenish, failed to stop at the officer's request.

Rivas led officers on a pursuit that reached speeds of approximately 80 miles per hour in a 50 mile per hour zone, according to Grandview police officials.

Officers were led through vineyards and other agricultural properties.

Several other agencies joined the chase the ended in the canal on Kilian Road.

Two suspects attempted to flee the vehicle, but were soon taken into custody.

Rivas was arrested on a requested charge of eluding. Mario Guadalupe Garcia, 36, of Sunnyside was also arrested on the requested charge of obstructing.

Also yesterday just after 8:30 p.m. two male suspects fled Grandview's Safeway store after stealing beer. Police located and apprehended the suspects after a short pursuit.
