Modesta Mendez, 81, of Sunnyside a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend went to be with her heavenly Father on Saturday, March 27, 2010 surrounded by her family.
Modesta was born Nov. 10, 1928 in Michoacán, Mexico, the daughter of Silverio and Guadalupe (Martinez) Torrez. In l944 she married Rafael Mendez in Villa Victoria, Mexico.
The Mendez family has made their home in Sunnyside for the past 20 years.
Modesta loved gardening, listening to music, sewing and cooking.
She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sunnyside.
Modesta is survived by two daughters, Guadalupe Mendez of Wenatchee and Anita Mendez of Sunnyside; six sons, Pedro (Trina) Mendez, Francisco (Maria) Mendez and Rafael Mendez, all of Wenatchee, Daniel Mendez and Luis Mendez, both of Sunnyside and Salvador (Dolores) Mendez of Chehalis; 52 grandchildren; 41 great- grandchildren; two sisters, Reynalda Torrez and Margarita Torrez, both of Mexico; and two brothers, Asension Torrez and Jesus Torrez, both of Mexico.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Rafael Mendez; and two daughters, Josepha Mendez and Maria Mendez.
The Mendez family would like to thank the staff of Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic in Grandview, Sunnyside Community Hospital, Yakima Regional Hospital and the Lower Valley Hospice for the loving care given to our mother.
Viewing and visitation will be held Tuesday, March 30, 2010, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., with a Rosary to be recited at 6 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home in Sunnyside. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, March 31, 2010, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sunnyside, with burial to follow at Lower Valley Memorial Gardens in Sunnyside.
