YAKIMA - The Sunnyside Lady Grizzlies fastpitch team won both ends of a doubleheader at Davis this past Friday for its first league victories of the season.
They opened the twin bill with a 15-3 victory on 10 hits and no errors. Sunnyside pitcher Trisha Gaethle struck out seven Pirates in the opener.
The Lady Grizzlies began the game with an 11-run lead in the first inning. They added to that score, tallying solo runs in the third and fourth innings. Two more runners made it home in the fifth inning.
Jazmin Penaloza of Sunnyside hit 2-for-2. Teammate Rubi Herrera went 3-for-4 at bat, one of those hits being a two-run double.
Another two RBI were off the bat of Stephanie Sanchez, who was 1-for-3 at bat.
Zenaida Perales hit 2-for-3, and teammates Mercedes Cantu and Ashley Church each got on base once.
"It was good to see the girls earn a doubleheader win," shared Lady Grizzly Coach Ralph Mendoza.
The nightcap went much the same way, with Sunnyside securing an 11-1 victory.
Pitcher Maleesha Maltos, shared Mendoza, "...was hitting her corners and jamming the Davis hitters."
She struck out five batters.
Sunnyside had 18 hits and no errors against the Pirates in the nightcap. The 10-run rule was in effect and the game only went five innings.
Davis' lone run came in the second inning on three hits and no errors.
"We were spreading the ball and hitting the gaps," Mendoza shared.
Sarasa Partida and Melissa Amaro stole the show with six steals apiece and perfect hitting. Partida hit 3-for-3 and Amaro was 4-for-4 at bat.
Teammate Jazmin Penaloza also hit perfectly, going 3-for-3 with two doubles in the mix.
Zenaida Perales of the Lady Grizzlies was 2-for-4, and Savanna Martinez and teammate Kimberley Alaniz each were 2-for-3 at bat.
"It was an excellent evening," Mendoza shared.
The Lady Grizzlies tomorrow (Tuesday) travel to Moses Lake to end the regular season.
Saturday, Sunnyside (2-8, 4-14) will host Hanford at West Valley in the Big Nine 3A District playoffs.
