KITTITAS - The Bickleton High School boys team got strong performances from Henrik Heldahl, Edgar Molina, Taylor Brown and Nic Venema as they repeated as District champions at the 1B District 5/6 meet held this past Friday in Kittitas.
Molina led the show with two first place finishes in the shot put and discus events.
He beat out Thorpe's Mathew Taggart in the shot put by nearly five feet. Bickleton Coach Darrell Lang said Molina is ranked second in the state in the event.
He is ranked third in the state in the discus throw. This past Friday his throw of 127-8 easily beat Mansfield's Korey Gould, who threw a second best distance of 120-5.
Heldahl won the high jump event with a personal record of 5-11. That height is the second best in the state, according to Lang.
Venema won the 300m hurdles and will represent Bickleton at State next week on the Eastern Washington University campus in Cheney. His time of 45.61 bested Trout Lake/Glennwood's C.J. Schuster, who finished second with a time of 46.25.
Venema will also represent Bickleton in the pole vault as he beat the State meet standard when he cleared 11 feet.
Brown claimed his District championship in the 110m hurdles with a time of 18.95. He beat Pateros' Ricky Heen, who finished second in 20.52.
Not qualifying for State but earning alternate status for the Pirates were Junior Hernandez (high jump, 3200m), Peter Clinton (800m) and Brown (high jump). The 4x400 relay team of Clinton, Hernandez, Heldahl and Brown also earned alternate status.
The Bickleton girls were led by Katelynn Clinton, who advances to State in the discus event with a second place finish. She was edged by Klickitat's Charice McConville.
She also earned alternate status in the 300m hurdles and the high jump.
Clinton was also part of the girls 4x100 relay team of Jenna Mount, Haley Goodnight and Jamie Venema that beat the State meet standard and earned a State berth with a time of 55.52.
Other Bickelton girls earning alternate status were Mount (200m), Christina Wilson (1600m) and the 4x400 relay team of Yan Dong, Johanna Jensen, Wilson and Venema.
