ELLENSBURG - Two Sunnyside swimmers, Toni Castillo and Marissa Broersma, competed this past Saturday at the 3A District meet in Ellensburg.
The two claimed a couple of top five finishes apiece, with Castillo posting a runner-up time of 25.82 in the 50-yard freestyle finals. Her State meet qualifying time was 25.60, and in the preliminaries this past Saturday, she was two-hundredths of a second faster. The fastest swimmer in the finals was Stephanie Tixier of Hanford, who tagged the end of the pool in 24.64.
Tixier also matched a meet record in the 100-yard butterfly, clocking 58.26. Castillo competed in the event and tagged the end of the pool in 1:01.42 for fourth place honors. She qualified with a time of 1:01.27.
Broersma earned fourth place honors in the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard breaststroke. She clocked 2:10.84 and 1:13.96, respectively. In the breast event, her State qualifying time was 1:12.42. In that event, she qualified for the 3A District finals in 1:14.84. Top honors were earned by Christine Tixier of Hanford in 1:09.61.
In the freestyle event, Megan O'Leary of Southridge was ahead of the field of swimmers, tagging the end of the pool in 2:02.12. Broersma qualified for the final event in 2:08.90.
Castillo and Broersma will compete at the 3A State meet in Federal Way Tuesday and Wednesday, Nov. 12-13.
