YAKIMA - The Davis High School bowling team got the best of Sunnyside this past Wednesday as the Pirates beat the Lady Grizzlies three games to one in the season opening match for both teams.
The Grizzlies, led by Amanda Villarreal and Mariah Gonzalez, took the first game by a score of 632-611. Villarreal bowled a 161 in the game and she was helped by Gonzalez, who bowled a 156.
But Davis bounced back in the second game, winning 668-581. In this game Davis was led by Oksana Edwards (169) and Delia Martinez (161).
The Grizzlies lost despite Villarreal increasing her score in the second game to 175. Gonzalez's score fell to 112, but Larisa Sagarnaga managed to improve on her score from the first game. She bowled a 123 in the second, up from 113 in the first.
The teams then played two baker games, where each player of the team of five bowled two frames. Davis outbowled the Grizzlies 131-117 in the first baker game and 142-84 in the second to win the match 3 games to one.
"I think we're looking pretty good," said Sunnyside Coach Tina Peabody. "Overall, we're stronger than we were last year."
The Sunnyside bowling team lost 12 seniors last year, including four varsity members. That translates into a very young team.
Peabody, however, is excited about the opportunities, noting she has several very strong junior varsity players she expects to turn the heat up on her varsity players.
Sunnyside (0-1) has a home match against the Eisenhower Cadets on Tuesday, Nov. 16, at 2 p.m., at Valley Lanes in Sunnyside.
