FEDERAL WAY - Sunnyside's Toni Castillo and Marissa Broersma this past weekend competed at the 3A Girls Swim and Dive State meet in Federal Way. Castillo brought home an eighth place medal for her performance in the 100-yard butterfly event.
Sunnyside High School Coach Jake Kessler said, "Overall, it was a very good swim meet...they (Castillo and Broersma) swam hard all weekend and performed when they needed to."
He said he is proud of how hard the two Sunnyside swimmers worked throughout the season and he is looking forward to next season.
Castillo, a senior at SHS, in 2009 earned 17th place honors at the State meet in the 100-yard 'fly, but she bested that performance, tagging the end of the pool in 1:00.10 in the 2010 finals. Her preliminary time this year was 1:00.56 and her seed time was 1:01.22.
Winning the event was Grace Wold of Mercer Island in 56.22, which is an All-American Consolation meet record.
Castillo earned 11th place honors in the 50-yard freestyle event, as well. She clocked a finals time of 25.31, beating her preliminary time of 25.37.
Lauren Kaufman of Hazen won the event, tagging the end of the pool and setting an All-American meet record in 23.31.
Broersma competed in the 100-yard breaststroke and tagged the end of the pool in 1:13.84. She earned 16th place honors for her effort.
Winning the event was Lauren Poli of Mercer Island in 1:05.34. That time earned Poli an All-American Consolation meet record.
Broersma's preliminary time was about five-tenths of a second faster than her finals time, and her seed time was 1:11.66.
Kessler, however, was pleased with how well the Sunnyside swimmer performed and looks forward to her return next year.
